Southeast Asia has been a focal point for political conflict for much of the last half of the last century. Looking at the landscape, you will see the beautiful tropical forests and fields of resource rich and fertile land. A closer look at these beautiful countries reveals great poverty, injustice and great spiritual need! While Buddhism is the prominent faith and spiritual perspective, there are also strong threads of Islam and Hinduism in places. These worldviews streaming through these societies has produced conflicts that separate and divide communities.
In this, the newest region where Interserve places workers, the challenges are great but the opportunities for service far greater. The Southeast Asian cultures are as warm, friendly, and hospitable as the food is flavorful. The climate is generally tropical and warm, the landscape and bio-diversity immensely beautiful, and the people are eager to grow in their modernizing cities and societies.
People and drug trafficking are huge and chronic challenges here, so many of our Partners work to assist children at risk, rescue women who have been trafficked, victims of disease (AIDS) pandemics, and other social and development programs. The Church is young, under severe persecution in many places – but the Lord is raising local leaders to build His people.
