Central Asia
- a cluster of newly independent countries in a relatively unknown part of the world. Countries with differing cultures and histories and resources but countries with many similarities:
all are weathering pressing economic crises while nursing economic disputes with each other.
all are experiencing rising nationalism, and are attempting to modernise and westernise while maintaining and redefining their national character.
all are on a social roller-coaster – crime is skyrocketing, overall birth rate is down, deaths from all causes are up, life expectancy is down, migration is rising.
all have seen the initial rush of post-independence joy being replaced by a yearning for stability and the search for new ideals.
Most of the newly-independent Central Asian Republics recognize the need for international assistance in improving their societies, economic structures and institutions. Their people are friendly, hospitable, and highly educated, though in economic difficulty.
They are very open to international assistance. In the name of Christ we can respond in a variety of ways e.g. we develop and facilitate work in the areas of medical, educational and community development: Encourage and mentor national business men in running their own businesses.
